It’s been a while since we went to a Ren Faire.
I enjoy them up to a point—they do have a same-same feel past a certain point if you’re just an occasional visitor, and the appeal wanes a bit when you don’t have younger children in the household any longer either.
But this knight at the Pennsylvania Ren Faire really caught my eye one year while we were watching the jousting. I didn’t get a perfect photo of him ever compositionally—I don’t like how tight this shot is on the horse’s head. But it’s a great shot of his really striking face, his armor and gear. The banners behind him work really well.
It’s the one class of photos focused on people that I don’t feel any hesitation about taking: it’s a public place, they’re performers, and even the attendees are often in costume or drawn into the overall performance space of the entire Faire. (Witness this little girl brought into fake-club a dueling opponent into defeat.)
