I once went prowling around in the woods along Route 1 in southeastern Pennsylvania where I knew there were some abandoned buildings and houses.
This was the first of the buildings I came across. By this point I was already thinking that maybe this wasn’t a great idea after all—these places were definitely abandoned, but it did occur to me as I looked at this one that someone could still be sleeping in there and maybe they’d be less than happy to have me taking pictures. By the time I got to the next set of houses, where two out of the three had actually collapsed, I got a clearer picture of the risk I was taking—it was pretty clear that the third more intact but still ruined house was in fact inhabited and that whomever was there was probably making meth—the area smelled like ammonia, there were trash bags covering the windows, etc. So I beat a hasty retreat out of there. Ruined structures are interesting subjects but generally you want to go with friends and be really careful regardless.
Unfortunately also the shots I took weren’t particularly interesting. I started messing around with this one because it had an ominous feeling to it in the original. I hadn’t done a lot of the “Photoshop X into Y” sort of thing (and I still don’t do it very often, nor am I particularly skilled at it) but I decided to really go for a horror-film treatment just to experiment a bit. My three additions are not particularly skilled but I think they came out basically ok.
