I’m getting to the point where I am not sure whether I’ve posted a particular image before. I need to do a better job keeping track. Substack, I have to say, is really terrible when it comes to searching one’s own archive. It’s very plain that they really have not built this publishing space as a long-term depository, but instead just as a newsletter-and-forget sort of thing. The web presence is there mostly to help authors build their readerships by letting new readers see what they’ll be getting through email. They have no real interest in letting people (including the authors) discover material from an author’s archive or maintaining a particular Substack as an archival space. I keep thinking about it as a blog but it’s not really built like one.
Speaking of archives, I have a lot of pictures of my child. I used to share them more on social media but I haven’t for a while—having converted somewhat to the school of thought that says your family members have a right to control how they appear even in more familial or friendly platforms. But this image is one of many where I was experimenting with motion blur in a mostly monochromal space full of interesting shapes, so my child’s presence is equally blurred. (And, I ought to add, not really desaturated in post-processing: there was something about this grey late winter day in this field of grey boulders with a stream threading through them that just sucked all the color out of everything.)
Love this photo!
