David Ibanda has recently adapted my PhD dissertation into a video. I think it could be thought of as an adaptation. Maybe I should get extra points if this is so, more points if it’s unique. But, more seriously, a new Shaka series is about to appear (Angus Gibson this time). But maybe we have to see and study it before we affirm it fits the category of adaptation.

This was what the adaptation class I actually taught was about--the first half we looked at actual adaptations, the second half we worked on breaking down some of the skills and workflow involved in identifying histories that might invite adaptation, etc. That was the part that got blown out of the water by the pandemic. The new Shaka series should be interesting, at least; I watched the old one a while back and Cele's performance remains pretty engaging. (There are enough Zulu-featuring films and TV series to cover 3-4 weeks of a class, really.)

I met Angus Gibson a few days ago. He mentioned that there was already fussing about it. I replied “there is no Shaka without debate.” Should I even be posting this remark?

Three comments down in a relatively obscure Substack seems a safe enough place.
