I’ve always loved this film as well. Oliver Reed was my favorite, playing true to the novels and looking like he just stepped out of a period portrait at times. Dunaway made an excellent villainess, as I recall, and Heston did give a great performance in the Grand Manner.

The best scene, I think, is the feast that the Musketeers steal via a fight. I don't think I've ever seen a more perfectly early modern European scene in a modern film.

What I especially like about the fight scenes is that they are NOT portrayed as effortless. People get visibly tired and worn out and start dragging.

Exactly. Reed looks like an overweight guy who drinks too much who is still completely willing to brawl (and who is deadly with the sword when needs be) rather than some clean Jedi Knight who just leaps athletically about without sweating. York is a lean whippet of a man but he's clearly a sweating, striving human who exerts himself almost manically during fights.
